Mental Health Matters
“Be the change you wish to see in the world.”— Mahatma Gandhi
This is the first post on my new blog. So firstly, a little bit about me and why I decided to start this blog. Through the day I work as a mental health support worker which I love! This means that I help people who are struggling with their mental health (people with depression, bipolar disorder, personality disorder, schizophrenia etc) by providing emotional and practical support. In my free time, I volunteer with the organisation Samaritans as a listening volunteer (I help people in distress by providing support in person, over the phone, by text or by email) and a mentor (I train new volunteers to become Samaritans). I also volunteer as a befriender whereby I help isolated elderly people to become reintegrated back into their community. Lastly, I’m currently undergoing training to become a youth mentor which will involve supporting children and young people who come from difficult home environments (drugs, alcohol, abuse etc) to reach their full potential.
You can probably guess by now that my biggest passion is to help people, especially those who are struggling with their mental health. My life motto is ‘Be the change you wish to see in the world’ (Mahatma Gandhi) and I hope that by speaking out about mental health, I will play my part in increasing understanding about mental health and subsequently, reducing the stigma attached to it. By doing my bit (as well as everyone else doing theirs) I am hopeful that come time, great changes will happen where we will move towards a society which values the importance of mental wellness, taking care of ourselves and others.
Those who know me know that mental health is something I talk and share information about all the time. So I thought, why not spread my enthusiasm to an even greater audience- the worldwide web! I hope to meet other like-minded people or those willing to find out more about mental health awareness on this blog.
I’m just getting this new blog going, so stay tuned for more. Subscribe below to get notified when I post new updates.
